Governance, Growth and Development in Selected West Africa n Countries: A Reconsideration of the Evidence
Abstract
In the last fifteen years, most countries in the West African sub -region have experimented democratic governance (representative democracy); elections have been held more than once, for example, in Ghana, Senegal, Nigeria, Cote D’Ivoire, Togo, Benin, The Gambia, Liberia and Sierra Leone with marginal violence. The growth rates of about 7.0% and the macroeconomic stability have been attributed to the practice of democratic governance in the countries. The preliminary regression results show ed that democracy, inflation and public sector investment are positively related to the growth of per capita income. But the dearth of data prevented a more rigorous testing of the stated hypotheses.
